Habitats/Ecosystems

Dear Parents,

We are learning about habitats of organisms within an ecosystem in our new unit. There are many different ecosystems around the world with many different organisms living in them.

Here are some Internet sites that your child and you can explore together. Have fun!

At the Habitats site, your child can select animals and plants they see in a woodland scene. This site helps them see what lives in a woodland area.

At the Ecosystem site, you and your child can read and learn more about ecosystems. This site gives information on the different ecosystem, what kinds of animals live in each one, and how they live there.

The site Build an online Habitat is so fun. Here you can change the ecosystems and put the right animal with it and weather. If it doesn't match up your animal will say funny things. You can also just make up crazy habitats. Enjoy!

The Sun

Dear Parents,

We have started our unit on the characteristics of the Sun. We are also studying the solar system and their position in relation to the Sun. Below is some helpful and fun Internet site.

At the Solar System Switch a Roo site, your child has to match up a planet or moon that has been divided in three section. This game will help them understand that planets and moons come in a variety of colors and textures.

At the site Planet Adventure, your child and you go into space to learn about all the planets and their position to the Sun. It shows many different facts about each planet.

At the Our Solar System, The Sun, site your child can learn more about the Sun. This site gives information on the Sun's statistics, what it is made of, and if we can live there. It also shows how much you would weigh on the Sun by you putting in your weight and gives other information.

Enjoy learning about the Sun and other planets by exploring the activities together.

Temperature

Dear Parents,

We are starting a new unit on how to gather information including temperature. Gathering temperature data is a 3rd grade TEK.

Here are some Internet site on temperature.

At the Keeping Warm site your children can see how the temperature of a liquid changes over time. Using this next site, How to make a thermometer your child and you can try keeping record of the temperature of a liquid at home.

At the Temperature Game site, your child can match icons like the human body to its correct temperature to compare the temperature of different icons. Also you can learn more about temperature at this site.

Watch for more when we start our next unit on the characteristics of the Sun.

Recycling

Dear Parents,

We are learning how to make wise choices of the disposal or recycling of materials. Learning how to do this is part of our science TEKS.
Here are some Internet sites that you and your child can explore and learn about recycling together.

At the Recycle City site, you can play Dumptown Game. You become the new City Manager and get people to start to recycle. You are in charge of 10 different programs to manage and a budget. Watch how waste is reduced as people start to recycle. How fun!

At this site Recycle Works it gives information on how to reduce, recycle, and how to buy recycled items. It also breaks down what is actually in our trash and landfills. Their is little quizzes on how much you know or learn.

This site I don't want to clean my room is fun and informational. Anita's room is a smelly mess and her dad is making her clean it up. Help her decide what to recycle, throw away, or reuse by clicking on objects in her room and put them in the right box. This might help you decide on how to clean your own rooms.

Enjoy all these activities.
More to come next week!
